Movies 2010 #13 Kaiji the Ultimate Gambler

Here’s the trailer.

I liked Kaiji the Ultimate Gambler. It’s not perfect, but it’s good in that challenge film way that makes even middling martial arts movies watchable. I expected something almost like A Chinese Feast. The twist is that it’s less like that and more like the PS2 game Shadow of the Colossus. It’s almost all “boss battles,” with very little filler in between. Right now, a month after watching it, all I remember are the very end and three big climactic gambling/game sequences. That’s actually okay as the three sequences are dramatic, creative and plain fun. There’s a lot of screaming, much intense concentration and tons of anxiety that run through these scenes and the games themselves are pretty diabolical.

Anyway, check it out if you get the chance.
