Movies 2013 (#1): John Carter

I expected to like John Carter and I did.

With that in mind, and the fact that it was deemed a bomb hanging over the conversation, I have to point out I think this film was marketed poorly. Neither the somber cover of Arcade Fire’s My Body is a Cage or the orchestra-rock cover of Kashmir really fit with the tone of the actual film. It feels like Disney was marketing the film they wanted to have, not the film that actually existed. I remember being confused by the trailers wondering if that was going to truly be the tone of the film.

Thankfully it wasn’t, but I think people’s expectation were out of whack with the finished product.

To me, this was a fun, pulp-adventure. Big, boisterous and a little bit goofy.
