Books 2010 #4 Boston Noir

Boston Noir is a Boston based noir anthology. I was most excited for the Dennis Lehane story, which was predictably great, but there were a couple other really good stories. I especially liked the work from Dana Cameron, Don Lee and John Dufresne.

Dana Cameron’s story, Femme Sole, set in colonial times, was a refreshing take in a book full of present day tales. It was also cracking mystery. Of all the stories in the book this one had the matched up best against Lehane’s in terms of pure mystery chops. A solid little story.

Don Lee’s sold me on a book or two. Less of a typical mystery than the rest of the stories in the book, The Oriental Hair Poets is a remarkable piece of short fiction. In short order he lays out three believable humans, wraps their lives together in a couple of novel ways and then leaves the reader with pleasantly fuzzy but still satisfying ending.

John Dufresne provided the Catholic priest tale I was expecting when I picked up the book. That it was good was a real bonus.

I should point out that there are a couple of stinkers in here. That’s to be expected in a book like this. You’ve been warned 🙂
