Movies 2018 #2 The Cloverfield Paradox

I’m not sure what people wanted out of this movie. I expected genre cinema, and got genre cinema. It doesn’t always make sense, but that’s okay. It kicks into high gear pretty quickly and just runs until the finale, which is the very minimum bar to clear for a successful Netflix movie. This did that.

Movies 2018 #1 Star Wars: The Last Jedi

From 2003 to 2011 I wrote at least a few words about every movie I saw. I’m going to try to return to doing that this year. I’m starting off with a little bit of a backlog, so we’ll see how it goes.

Anyway, Star Wars, how about that? I am a lifelong Star Wars fan and can say without irony that seeing Star Wars at the age of 5 in the theater changed my life. That said, I don’t take part, in any way, in organized Star Wars fandom. I read 3 or more Star Wars comics a month (Star Wars, Doctor Aphra*, Poe Dameron and then whatever miniseries are interesting), re-watch the good movies every once in a while and all that. I just don’t go on the internet and read anything written by anyone about any of it. I just live with the franchise on my own terms.

All of that is a preamble to me saying that I really liked The Last Jedi and while I know that there was some controversy or push-back or something about it on the Star Wars internet, I don’t know what it was and… after thinking about it for a few minutes, I realized I didn’t really care to know what it was. I just poked my head up, enjoyed the movie and went back into my fandom-free bubble.

*Doctor Aphra is super great. I ❤️ Doctor Aphra.

Various News Items (DrunkenFist.com, New Tech Book, Brattle Film Foundation, New Film Book: Choose the Sword)

I have some news!

Since, as some of you might know, I’m no longer active on Twitter, I’ve got to get back in the habit of sharing news here. It’ll be good for me, doing some real blogging for a change (in addition to reaping the benefit of not being on Twitter every day.*)

On to it!

DrunkenFist.com

After too long to even mention, I just relaunched my site, DrunkenFist.com. I’m really happy to have it updated for the modern web and am continuing to add new content.

Check it out!

Brattle Film Foundation

As you may or may not know, I’ve got a strong interest in non-profits. I’ve supported many organizations over the years as a donor, I spent a couple of years on a small non-profit board and I’m involved with the Trustees of Reservations as a Trustee and member of the Marketing Committee. Adding to that, I just joined the board of the Brattle Film Foundaton. I’ve been going to the Brattle for probably 30 years and have been a long-time supporter of the Foundation (since 2003, I believe,) so it’s a natural fit.

Mastering SVG

I know this isn’t my technology blog, but I’m still sharing the news here. After taking several years off from the writing books front, I’ve signed on to write a book with Packt Publishing. It’s called Mastering SVG and it will be out early next year.

Choose the Sword

Finally, I’ve going to be publishing another book. This one will be on my own. I’m collecting my film writing into a collection called Choose the Sword. I’ll be self-publishing that, on Amazon. I’ve started the process. My guess is it will take a year to get it out the door. Just in time for Christmas 2018!

*It’s the best thing I’ve done all year. I don’t open the app. I don’t look at it on the web. Certain content of mine ends up there (this post will), but I don’t consume anything via Twitter anymore. It’s really weird, as I’ve been a daily (hourly!) Twitter user for a decade, but Twitter is just awful and I don’t need any extra awful in my life now.

In addition to the Boston Globe, which I read every morning (an actual paper newspaper) I installed the New York Times and Washington Post apps. I get all the news I need.
