With their victory in the team time trial yesterday, the Astana team solidified their grip on the race in a big way. At this point they have more than a minute to their next likely rival (American Christian Vende Velde= still something of a mystery after his fall in the Giro) and nearly three minutes to the big challengers Carlos Sastre and Cadel Evans.
The thing is, and this is what will make the next two and a half weeks interesting- the team itself is still not sorted out at all. With riders #2-5 on GC, Astana is going to need to sort out the team pecking order in short order. The good news for that is Friday’s stage is a perfect launching point for such a selection.
We’ll see how it goes.
