My favorite movie from*… Belgium

Toto le Heros

I started with an easy one as Toto les Heros is probably the only Belgian film I’ve ever seen. Still, it would probably be my favorite if I’d seen a dozen. Equal parts creative and charming I fell in love with this film when I first saw it more than fifteen years ago and the intervening years, and subsequent viewings, have only deepened my appreciation for this little gem. It’s wildy creative, sweet, funny, charming, dark and probably five other adjectives, but it all works as a seamless whole. That’s especially impressive when one considers the wild use of time and the occasional surrealist bursts that pepper the film. Nothing seems out of place and nothing gets in the way of an enjoyable, fascinating and ultimately unique 90 minutes.

Here’s a scene (thanks to Youtube.) The infectious song Boum, by French singer/songwriter Charles Trenet certainly helps sell this scene. Sadly there’s no English subtitles, but the feel of the film is apparent even with the language barrier.

*”My favorite movie from…” is going to be an ongoing, if irregular series around here. I just want to really give the question some thought and publishing the results seems like the way to go.
