Of course, there’s really only one topic after that stage- Cancellara’s victory. His ride today turned a pretty boring stage into a truly memorable one. There was some drama with the peloton having to work like mad over the last few kilometers to catch the breakaway, but for the most part it was just an opportunity to sit around and listen to Bob Roll and the occasional Frankie Andreu*. I mean, other than the drama about catching the break, the most interesting thing was seeing the mountain jersey change hands days before we even see the first proper mountain stage.
Cancellara changed all that. What a splash he’s made this week? He’s obviously a talented bike rider and he’s had some great results, being the world champ in the time trial and all, but to have two results like this in the first week of the Tour? Wow. And the way he won today? All of a sudden I looked up and he was demolishing the field from a few hundred meters out. It was a crazy move.
CSC can almost pack it in at this point and call it a successful Tour. They’ll have two stage wins (at least) and probably a week in yellow before the race really even starts. If Sastre or Schleck is on form it could be a dream tour for CSC.
Let’s hope the interesting stage trend continues, especially through the weekend. I want to see some mountains…
*and to watch the countryside roll by, of course.
