The big thing I’ll come away from with from these last two days is the performance of all three top GC contenders in the Time Trial. It was a real battle out there. Fun, fun stuff. Levi really tore into the course. He was saying all along he was trying to time the race for the last week and he did so, to perfection. If he hadn’t been riding for Contador that last day in the mountains we might be talking about yet another American champion* as he could have taken more time out of people had he ridden his normal, steady, grinding pace up the climb,
What I want to know now is who the new sponsor for Discovery will be. They should be making a proper assault on the Grand Tours next year. Popo is probably ready to take the next step at the Giro (finishing eighth at the Tour doing the work for the team he did is pretty crazy), they’ve obviously got a team to bring to the Tour and Contador is Spanish, so whoever ponies up the dollars will probably get a lot of bang for their buck.
Assuming, of course, some doping scandal doesn’t overshadow the on-bike performance once again…
Still, I’ll be marking off the days on my calendar until next year. Whatever happened in this race, I still absolutely adore the spectacle and drama of the Tour. There’s no sporting event that really compares.
*with the fate of Landis obviously undetermined.
