Alexandre Vinokourov wins the stage and cements his place as one of my favorite athletes in the whole wide world. It really bums me out that he wasn’t able to ride this race at his fullest, but it’s still been a pure joy to watch him fight back from the crash to take two stage wins.
thanks to flickr user jcsalome for the excellent photo
I’m pretty desperate for Contador to win this race now. He’s just so aggressive and fun to watch I feel like he deserves it at this point. I forget where I read it, but he said he’s going for broke on Wednesday. The quote was something like “I don’t care if I finish sixth, I’m going for first.” I hope he does. I think he’ll take time out of Rasmussen in the time trial, so he doesn’t even need to gain that much time to vault himself into the top spot.
I also hope Levi leaves it all on the mountain. He’s got to make up a few minutes on Evans, who’s starting to show the strain of the race and Wednesday is his last chance. I’m really pulling for him to grab that third spot. discovery finishing 1 and 3 (and something around 10 with Popo) would be a dream result for me. Especially if American Chris Horner can claw his way up just a little further into maybe the top 15…
The off day is going to kill me.
[edited to add] of course, not 24 hours after I posted this it was announced that Vino tested positive for blood doping (specifically he was found to have foreign red blood cells in his blood.) I’m totally bummed.
