I really only have one thought- how the hell did Robbie McEwen win that stage? Injured, dropped off the back and nowhere to be seen until it was basically all over he still managed to take the win and make me look (at least temporarily) like I know what I’m talking about picking him for the green jersey.
Of course, he still has to finish on the Champs-Elysees for that pick to pan out…
With McEwen taking it, and the general level of competitiveness amongst the sprinters, it was a fun finish to an overall enjoyable stage. The English countryside was gorgeous and Millar’s move made for a better than average breakaway. All the little dramas of a Scot in the breakaway in a Tour stage on British soil made for good television. As did the surprisingly tough Goudhurst Hill.
Unfortunately, for the first time in three years I’ll be working a day job during the month of July, so I’ll be missing the stages as they happen live. I really enjoy starting off my days with a few hours of Paul Sherwen and Phil Liggett talking while the French countryside rolls by in the background.
Maybe I’ll just quit my job.
