And thus ends this years books… I started 10-28-2003 and I’ve just finished Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell: A Novel, so that’ll end my count at a nice round twenty. Some time soon I should go through and do a page count, because looking back I think I’ve read the equivalent of like seventy five books based on the length of some of these monsters. This last one was 800 pages and I’m pretty sure that wouldn’t rank top five in terms of length this year.
As for the book itself, it deserves every last bit of hype it’s getting. Fantastic, wondrous, page turning stuff, full of imagination, characters worth reading about and an alternative history of the world I’d trade for the existing one in a hot second. Gaiman is apparently friends with the author so you might be tempted to take his glowing praise with a grain of salt, but trust me, there’s no need to exaggerate. This is classic fantasy right here.
