Alphabet Soup, also known as Alphonse or Alph for short, is a Boston based artist. Self taught, with graffiti as his only source of art education, he has managed to expand his experience to include fashion design, print making, paper making, sneaker design, graphic design and tattooing. But really, he just likes to draw on things that aren’t his.

When asked about the the name of his up coming solo show, That Boy Needs Therapy, this is what he had to say:

“Last fall I was locked up in Portland Oregon on a graffitI conviction. Before being transfered from the court house to the county jail I was sitting in an 8th story holding cell with a window over looking part of the city. I’m wearing fucking leg shackles and hand cuffs and the only thing I could think about was how I could hit the roof spot I could see across the street. I suddenly thought “This isn’t a crime. This is an illness.”. I am amazed no one has ever treated it as one. Maybe thats why criminalizing it doesn’t work and the threat of jail only encourages graffiti writers and street artists. Everywhere I look I want to draw where everyone can see it. How do you explain that to someone? Sex offenders go to therapy, drug addicts go to therapy, how do you properly treat the compulsion to write on things? Graffiti is such an odd phenomenon. I blame it on Sesame Street, but believe me, you can’t really explain that to a judge.”
