Movies 2009 #23 Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

Stunning that it’s taken me this long to review Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, but it has.

It’s good. At first pass it’s maybe my favorite of the films. It’s a fantastic blend of character and action, deftly plucking vital pieces of the novel in order to drive the heavily truncated, but still gripping story. I mean, I knew exactly how it was going to turn out and I still was on the edge of my seat from the word “go.”

I did miss some of the “who is the half blood prince?” detective work and the weird obsession that Harry had with the prince, but overall it was an acceptable absence. That stuff played so well as prose and wouldn’t have played as well on screen (especially when compared tot he stuff they did show), so I can understand the decision.

At this point, I’m basically ready to gnaw my arm off in order to see the next two.
