Movies 2007 #19 – The Fountain

The Fountain (Widescreen Edition) I watched this one on the plane back from London. Yeah, it’s been one of those weeks*- it’s taken me this long to get around to posting this….

Anyway, this is a stunning film for the plain fact that it was made at all. It’s like a Tarkovsky film- ponderous, thoughtful, and almost purely non-commercial. not a typical American feature at all. Good or bad, I think we need more films like this in the States. It keeps people on their toes.

As for the film itself, on first pass, I’ll say it’s beautiful to look at and it has all the intelligence you;d expect from a Darren Aronofsky film. I suspect that after a second (or even third) viewing I might even grow to like it as subsequent viewings would open up a film like this greatly. It’s a complex story told in three separate time periods by an intellectually rigorous filmmaker- there’s stuff to see in the margins and there’s no way to see that stuff when one is busy following the plot (such as it is.)

*and there’ll be a lot more random, late night posts around here as I’m going to be working a lot over the next couple of weeks. Bleary eyed is the new shit.
